Does anybody know of any books, articles or legal documents dealing with the imposition of Prohibition in Hawaii, Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?
During WW1 the British Royal Navy mounted a very effective blockade on Germany, which resulted in terrible hardship and starvation for hundreds of thousands of German civilians including the deaths of very many children. This is also occasionally referred to as a war crime and it is certainly highly questionable that the blockade carried on well into 1919 months after the war had actually ended.
The causes of WW1 are complex but Germany had launched an invasion of neutral and neighbouring countries and it was plain that they would never have capitulated without the catastrophic hardship on the home front and the nascent red rebellions in Germany forcing the hand of the military.
The blockade was an inevitable consequence of their war of aggression, while the continuation of the blockade after Nov 1918 cannot be justified it certainly could while Germany was occupying France and Belgium and fighting in the field. The concept of war crimes is a highly emotive one and it is certainly not a simple matter of the ‘crime’ being ‘horrible’.
Going back to WW1 the Imperial German Airforce had an ambitious plan to destroy London by repeated aerial bombing from giant four engined bombers. This may very well have been unlikely with the technology of the day but the ‘will’ was there. Civilian casualties would have been enormous of course.
War is not a sport, its not about playing the game it is about winning.
