I'm looking for any study that found fungal biotransformation of terpenes by the secretions of a fungi grown in agar petri dishes (or any solid substrate). That is, some fungus capable of biotranfsorming terpenes without "touching" them with the hyphae, but biotransform the terpene by secreting some substance (exoenzymes or similar). If you don't know about any study like this on terpenes, may you know about some with other substances? or with bacteria or any other organism?
I've been quite extensively searching about that and by now I have not been able to spot any article like this.

How would get surety that secretions are doing biotransofrmation instead of spores?
It is very difficult to say that fungal secretions are capable of doing transformations.
Most of the transformations of terpenes such as hydroxylation or other oxidation or reductions are co-factor or coenzyme dependent, therefore, we like to work with whole-cell cultures.
I you are interested then you can try following for whole-cell transformations:
Aspergillus flavus ATCC 11489, Beauveria bassiana ATCC 7159, Curvularia lunata ATCC 12017, Penicillium chrysogenum ATCC 9178
Tank you Ghazanfar, I know it may not be usual nor easy, but we belive it could be possible. Several fungal pathogens release toxins that kill tissue of their host before they "arrive", so couldn't they release exoenzymes capable of biotransforming terpenes even before hyphal contact?
Hello Ander, many fungi (in particular white rot fungi) secrete a number of different enzymes (hydrolases but also laccases and peroxidases) also when cultured under suitable conditions on petri dishes. Hemoperoxidases such as LiP and MnP, but also peroxygenases seem the best candidates for the reactions you are searching for. There is a quite useful minireview on the topic, and also a huge mass of pertinent literature.

Ander, I didn't say that it is impossible. It is possible but chances or transformations are lesser in using secretions than the whole-cell culture because you are not targeted.
Hello Ander, the diversity of terpenes imply that there are multiple degradation pathways involved. You may want to have a look at this paper which is specifically looking at limonene degradation:

I am currently pursuing this work by doing the functional characterization of genes putatively involved in the initial steps of the proposed pathway.
