An association and affiliation of a researcher with scientific and research societies like IEEE, SAIM, ASME, AAAS e.t.c increase his or her research or academic credibility and reputation?
A simple affiliation? Maybe infinitesimally. Some societies require only a relevant PhD, an application letter and paying the membership fee. Others also require the recommendation of 2 or more members, to have a considerable impact on one's field etc. so they are more selective and being a member here "worth more", if we treat society membersips as academic capital. If you have a position or function in that society (beside being a member), however, that could give a real boost to credibility and reputation.
Also there is the question of how much is too much. One can not possibly be active in dozens of scientific societies, a credible range of membership numbers is imho somewhere around 2 to 4 for a mid-carrier researcher (seniors get a lot of honorary memberships & positions for known reasons). I personally have problems to be active and responsive in 2 different soceties at a time; oc these are very active ones where something is always happening.
Credibility and reputation of a scientist is definitely increased by affiliation to scientific societies. After all, you are being affiliated there only because of your academic credibility!
