Well, on one hand, a lot of people will slow down and learn to live without extra spending such as travels, restaurants, etc. (if it takes long enough time). It might have a positive effect on sustainability issues. On the other hand, in order to boost the economy after the crisis, there will be a lot of will from businesses and governments to do it as fast as possible, often at any cost. Thus, environmental factors might not be the priority and might even take as a step back in terms of environmental sustainability. We will see.
This is a complex question. I'm eager to look economically.
What seems to me is that people have seen how reducing the number of economic activities can help the environment and reduce its contamination. But what I want to know is the behaviour of businesses after this pandemic. They are likely to reinforce their activity due to the significant loss they have incurred: such as oil extraction in the Middle East.
Finally, I think that:
People will respond well to the positive effects of this pandemic and they tend to make this condition sustainable
but businesses may will increase their production capacity and we may quickly return to previous global envirnmental conditions.
Iam certainly hopeful of such a transformation in the thinking about sustainability and environmental challenges. Because, as is evident, this is for the first time after the Second World War that the entire world gets an 'experienced feel' of the traumatic situation prevail all over. Incidentally, the Global Sustainability Agenda 2030 [involving the 17 SDGs] is also keep us alerted and constantly engaged towards achieving sustainability. All what is needed is to accelerate our efforts to fast achieve the goals set forth, beyond the narrow confines of 'measurable indicators of the targets'. We may be able to make commendable progress if we wholeheartedly plan our development priorities and strategies for the next 10 years with greater assemblage of 'individual and collective responsibilities'. An Inclusive Global Development agenda becomes the immediate priority especially in view of achieving the SDG12, which underlines the core principles of 'responsible consumption and production'.
