It is clear that journal differ in the format of papers especially the literature depending on the publisher. For this reason it needs efforts to switch from one format to another without using EndNote software. I think there should be consensuses between publishers to make one common format for the references. .
Zakaria - that would be nice wouldn't it? I doubt that would happen for some time for a number of reasons. For instance - Vancouver (numerical) is popular with some publishing houses because it 'saves copy space'. It makes for shorter articles - so less publication costs. There is also 'geographical preference' i.e. the US tends to favor APA - Europe tends to favor Harvard. It would take a lot of people to 'come to the table', from many countries, to agree on a common format. Everyone would want their preference - so I think that we are 'stuck' with the difference that presents itself for some time to come. To add to the difficulty - many journals use an 'adaptation' of common formats. This occurs because of change of editor, administrators etc - and things change over time. I think that the best that we can expect is that publishing houses i.e. Elsevier ask all of their journals to adopt the same universal style.

Dear is not necessary to have the same format of reference by different journals.
Although it is discretion of journals publishers to prescribe different pattern /format/template for manuscript preparation including reference; but it have been better if journal publishers adopt a common format for the references that would not only facilitate manuscript preparation but also ease citation tracking.

I believe that all journals within a particular discipline have the same formula for writing sources. Scientific research should be the writing of the sources according to a particular context, while the literary research has a different context in order to not confuse researchers in the writing of their research.
I think all journal should follow some common structure to maintain the quality the of all journals.
In my experience, different disciplines use different reference styles.
- Education, Psychology, and Sciences use APA
- Business, History, and the Fine Arts usually use Chicago Style
- Many Humanities disciplines use MLA
I had an historian explain to me once who Chicago style is better for history, but I do not remember what the rationale was. :-)
I like that some journals say that the initial submission can use any of the reference styles.
Standardization, in any domain, is useful to all the users and must be a welcome proposition. Like SI units, a uniform referencing pattern adopted globally will eliminate the need to keep track of different referencing patterns followed by different publications.
