Active learning aims to make the students an active part of the learning process. He should prepare and discuss with his team the assignment then explain it to the class under the supervision of the instructor. I applied it in many of my courses and find that the student has a positive rule in the learning process rather to be just a listener.
Interesting question and very current. Totally in accordance with your experiences, mine have also been very enriching and the results in the post degree have been very good. I have worked on active learning, from the use of various techniques and methods to encourage participation, from teamwork, insisting on the types of evaluation (Co-evaluation, self-assessment and hetero-evaluation) and the integration of ICT. It seems to me that today it is an urgent challenge in Education and in particular and especially in Higher Education and post-graduate studies.

In all seminars (called proseminars in Finland) and in writing the final thesis in nursing in Sweden, students have an active role and discuss own and mates' works. They also serve as opponents for other students' work. It was perhaps the most rewarding teaching experience I have had. Very positive and good performances by the students.
