‘’Colour’’ is important to painter, interior designer or interior architect. However it has different cultural signification in architecture. I like to know your experience about such issue.
Colour has an immediate effect on 'the look and feel 'of a place. It adds sensory delight and diversity giving often drab boring surroundings some interest and contrast. Beyond this colour affects us psychologically in subtle ways although I am not sure we fully understand how this happens.
Colour is clearly a factor in the field of ‘Fashion’ choice, think if you will of new season clothing ranges. It is also subject to a detailed personal response which may raise significant like/dislike tendencies that are strong enough to establish success or cause failure of a product line.
It’s main significance in architectural design is firstly as an attention attracting factor, but also as an indication of quality and sophistication. The colour of company logos for example are a very carefully selected and expensively promoted as a brand feature. Architecturally exterior colour is normally muted and natural in tone, but visit mentally if you will any town centre high street of small shops. Here, architectural and design considerations are typically left behind and you may find a riot of attention-grabbing competing colour.
Just consult and apply color psychology and you will see the importance of this element in architecture. The right choice may cause pleasant or unpleasant sensations. I recommend reading texts about color psychology.
Being culture bound, color plays a pivotal role in distinguishing works of architecture . As you have astutely observed, color has a great bearing on human soul , and therefore, the beauty and mystery of an architectural design only emerges through affection, attention, interest and compassion of the beholders who see it by attending to its colors, details and irony.
According to what I know about the physical nature of colours and based on my previous design experience, I would say that colour definitely plays a very important role in architecture.
To start with, there are some objective parameters, such as ability of differently-coloured surfaces to attract and give off heat. For example, most buildings in hot regions (i.e. Middle-East) tend to be faced with white or beige materials to prevent over-heat. On the other hand, solar panels, widely used in sustainable architecture, are made of black material to absorb as much solar power as possible.
Secondly, different colours affect our perception and state of mind differently. As an example, green shades are associated with nature and help people to feel calm. Blue colour is associated with cold, while red interiors give feeling of warmth or even heat.
Finally, colour plays a significant role in some cultures, where certain shades can have some sacred meaning, or simply refer dwellers of differently-painted houses to various castes or professions.
According to Gestalt theory, colour is one of main elements in our perception system. Moreover the colour is influenced by many factors such as environment, culture, history, and etc. Also colour has several laws according to hue, brightness, and saturation. However the question has opened. Do you think using colour is a significant task for architects or supported element? Why?
Colour psychology is dealing mainly with emotion and it’s very significant element in interior architecture or interior design as it creates atmosphere, but the architecture is more rational than emotional and it has functional ends.
I am still convinced that colour is an important factor to consider for architects, not less or even more important than for interior designers. First of all, because possible consequences of its' application can be much more influential for the "users" of this architecture. If there is a misfit colour inside one flat/interior - it is a problem of the owners. However, if the colour is not selected correctly for a building or a group of buildings - it can make many people either distracted, or even depressed. It is important to understand the influence of colour on humans feelings first of all in order not to make wrong colour designs.
If we look at come more "calculable" aspects of colour, I would again use an example with different colour shades and their ability to absorb and release heat. Again, selecting the colour correctly can save a building or a space from over-heat and make it more comfortable, thus attracting people with following calculable consequences (like economical growth, environmental sustainability, better health of the visitors/dwellers, etc.)
I agree that colour selection in private interior spaces is different than public and outdoor spaces as individual response is different than groups or public response. Also I agree that colour family (warm or cool) has different effects. These are some factors that determine colour importance. However can we able to control colour changes during day or night times?
Color is a significant element of the architectural design, since it influences the visual properties of the form: geometry, object dimensions, visual weight of the object,
suggest a texture different from the surface finish of the architecture...
Yes! Colors have universal meanings and significant impact on human psychology such as mood. Selecting appropriate colors help enhance mood and psychological aspects.
Yes, colour can be an important element in the identity of a building, or of a city: for example, Bologna (Italy) is known as "the red city", due to the walls and ceilings color of their traditional houses. And when it comes to intervening in historical areas, colour is, of course, a significant element for architectural design.
