Lots of people commit themselves to seeking a life of happiness. However, numerous philosophers have claimed that such a life is not sufficiently noble for human beings. What do you think?
Why in first place, we want to experience happiness; it is ok, if we are not happy, because in this life many things we can't control, then why try to control?; people are seeking answers, for work life balance, if we are failed to have that balance (we cannot live while acting as robots) then what could be done? life is not straight line, it is fluid...; the more, we want to get control of it, the more it goes from our hands, like sand, like water.....we cannot hold water in our hands.....happiness is trying to hold water in our hands....
The more you chase happiness, the more unhappy you are going to be. To be happy is a rare biproduct, a fleeting moment of transcendence in a painful life. Accept that no life passes without hardships. The richer you are the more likely you are to end up in hell.
I think, the concept of 'Happiness' differs from one person to the other. Some one is happy in getting lot of bank balance, having big house and car. Some one is happy in helping others and there are certain people who is happy in just living alone praying and chanting mantras.
And i totally agree with s. Béatrice Marianne Ewalds-Kvist . Happiness comes from inside. It is just a one thought which is created by human being. Just create one good thought you will become happy and if you create a negative thought you will be in great sorrow. Finally i can say everythings are inside us. Just do not run for happiness. Just enjoy the life the way you are and always practice gratitude.
Gratitude boosts our ratio by helping us experience more positive emotions such as optimism, enthusiasm, love, joy, and happiness, while protecting us from the destructive emotions of envy, greed, bitterness, and resentment. Improve our self-esteem. Gratitude makes you aware of the good other people do for you.
Sadanand, thanks for your response. I don't think the "concept" of happiness changes, but certainly the specifics that fulfill it for different people certainly do. Like you, I think Beatrice has offered an interesting insight.
Personally to me happiness is external driven which can only last for a while. Moreover since it is external driven & most of the times we can't control the external surrounding / environment, hence it might be futile in pursuing happiness. Instead, I prefer to pursue contentment in heart which is flowing from our inside / our internal-self. Since we can control / adjust / adapt ourselves, then pursuit of contentment is more realistic / achievable e.g. poor people still can feel contented even though they are penniless etc.

A fine 18th century view Jennifer, thank you. But what about a smart phone, well read Twitter account, and a good life partner of whatever type preferred?
The secret of happiness is to live wisely, prudently, trying to plan well what can be planned and enjoy the gifts of fate, that which can not be reasonably predicted to go through life without worries, without serious problems, to love and to be loved, to cultivate friendship, develop passions and fulfill different spheres of human life, including family and professional life.
