Yes, I have implemented CL in all my courses that I teach. It involves group preparation and presentation of case analyses in the class, doing Group projects, and groups doing exercises in the class to reflect on the class learning. The advantages are as follows:

--Less stressful to each individual, as they divide the work among all members

--Easier to overcome difficulties-- when one group member experiences difficulty in her/his part, discussion with others helps solve the issue.

--Promotion of bonhomie and friendliness

--Promotes better appreciation of diversity as students are from different states in India

--The collective efforts can lead to better national integrity

One important aim that we hope to obtain from public education is national unity in a country with several ethnic groups.  Have you investigated CL in relation to fostering close ties among students that will positively contribute to national unity, in the long run?

Yes, I have, and CL turns out to be a  very productive and efficient teaching/learning tool. Learning gains in particular are greater.

Debi is an expert and I agree with his remarks.

I would add, that I use during seminars CL and case studies (on particular topics of disabilities/illnesses and related  issues)  as qualitative field tasks for 4-5 persons counting groups of students. I noticed the following:  increasing group cooperation within small groups and friendliness. Besides, greater courage to public speaking  on phorum before entire  group of participants of seminars, and slightly increasing tolerance for critics made by the other groups of opponents. 

Thanks for your ideas, dear friends.  Have you ever come across a questionnaire to be used for collecting data on fostering collaboration, goodwill, harmony?  It's because only national unity will enable my country to become a developed nation.  I have very good friends of all races, and I help them to celebrate their festive occasions, because I believe that everyone should have liberty of conscience. If you do find a questionnaire, please let me use it. Otherwise, I should come up with one such instrument. Thanks.

We use it all the time. In all our courses we have group projects to inculcate the CL practices. The students here also have the habit of collaborating even for assignments and the like. Rarely we get some specimens who do not mix with their colleagues, but most of the time they are. Best that I found is to use small groups with a maximum of three students per group so that everybody contributes. Some times we also make sure that they maintain journals and keep track of individual contributions to the project. I also use sometimes a way of normalizing the contribution.

Some times we also make sure that they maintain journals and keep track of individual contributions to the project.'  I think that my students are happy that they are evaluated individually, although they work in a group, because the contribution of each group member must be considered fairly.  Their journals will give us a glimpse of their actual contributions.

Collaboration learning (CL) brings students together to support the learning of each member of the group while promoting creativity and critical thinking. CL promotes student to student interaction as the primary mode of learning and also support socially constructed meaning and knowledge creation. In this regard, a new and emerging trends to be noted is the collaborative online learning which is becoming popular that allows connecting anytime and anyplace and where interaction take place on the screen!

Thanks Golam.  I get my students to do some collaborative online learning.  Each one buys a 1GB data package, and it's especially useful to get info for their lab reports. My students find it's more economical to use WhatsApp rather than sending texts, so they are happy to comply, and we have a WhatsApp learning group :)
