I've been reading some great articles from Anke Berns (among other authors) from the University of Cádiz. The themes are mostly within using eLearning software and video games for teaching purposes. I think you can use any research on learning styles for online learning.  I do agree that Community Colleges student may have a specific characteristic which you will want to accommodate but also do remember that most studies generalize by different demographics.  The demographics may include one side of the bell curve where those who have degrees already and are returning to upgrade skills at the said institution, or the other side of the bell curve who are first time online learners.  I believe, and I may be wrong, that looking at any research that discusses the main factors can be fruitful to gain the appropriateness of learning strategies.

Yes you do Camille.  I was working on a presentation and looking for specific data on community college students and just wasn't finding quite what I needed. However, there were studies conducted on online students between the ages of 25-50 (basically, the target demographic ages of most community college students).  I am interested in conducting my own research but need to do a thorough lit review as my jumping off point.  Thank you for your viewpoint!

I think here there is a conceptual problem: when talking about learning styles: what theory, among several dozens, do you have in mind?

Mulptiple Intelligences and VARK (visual/aurual/reading*writing/kinesthetic).  Also looking at work by Knowles and Kolb.

Thank you for sharing Tesia's Tedx Talk.  I have to admit that I am intrigued by this concept. I'll have to read more on this topic to get a better sense of the research out there.

I have a study I would like to recommend. Although it's not  about community college students per se, they are about learning/teaching styles in an online environment.

Thanks Jonathan!  I will see if I can access it from my institution.  The more I read, the more I'm finding that learning styles are falling out of favor.  I don't know if that holds true with learner characteristics, however, so I've turned research in that direction. I'll be interested to read what the paper says about motivation.
