We use mainly ketamine and reserve zoletil (same as Telazol: tiletamine, zolepam 50 mg/ml each) for some resistant animals or when we need a more flacid (smooth) muscle.
We have the same observation that zoletil sedated animals were more quiet or less reactive one to two hours after recovery. We thus use only 50-100 µl of zoletil compared to 400 to 500 µl ketamine for animals around 4 Kg.
In fact the animal behavior might be largely variable. We always began with the lower possible dose and adjust depending of the animal. When i have to do it often I use a table with personalized amount for each animal.
Thank you for your response. Do you find it is necessary to keep close watch on them during the 1-2 hours after recovery where they are less reactive? Or is periodic checking acceptable?
If the temperature control is correct periodic checking is acceptable. This mean that the room where are the animals are not too hot or too cold. I cannot say more because we use zoletil no so often.
