I am working on a study regarding Non-destructive testing methods for pipe materials and currently I am trying to find out if ultrasound testing methods have more limitations for stainless steel types than for carbon steels. Any keywords regarding important material properties or testing methods would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Ultrasonic are sensitive to coarse grained structure materials. Stainless Steel is a coarse grain structure compared to SS. Ultrasonics are scattered at grain boundary causing high attenuation loss. Hence further propagation or reflection becomes difficult compared to CS materials.
