I suspect that the majority of primary school teachers would use auxillary means. In many Australian schools teachers use virtual manipulatives (from NLVM or Illuminations) on Interactive Whiteboards (IWB) or they use concrete manipulatives to encourage students to develop conceptual understanding. It is difficult to see how students can develop conceptual understanding without the use of auxillary materials.
