I am doing a GC MS analysis of plant volatile compounds. I am observing that the volatile concentration of few compounds decrease in presence of sodalime. Can somebody let me know if soda lime reacts or absorbs plant volatiles compounds like monoterpenes, sesquiterpens and lipids (example nonanal, octanal ).
Sodalime being basic or alkaline reacts with the aldehdyes to yield acidic products which are different from the aldehydes
Soda lime is very reactive. It is more likely to cause the alteration of molecules than absorb them. With organic acids you are likely to get sodium salts and other changes will also occur, including potentially hydrolysis of complex compounds if there is any water present at all.
Normally sodium salts (unhydrous sodium sulphate is used ) are used to absorb water .

@Olga Lock sorry for replying this late, no I am not using it to absorb water but carbon dioxide.
@ Valerie Steele sorry for late response. I was thinking the same but I am seeing compounds like Myrecene, Methylheptenone, α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, Lactone completely vanishing after the usage of soda lime for CO2 removal.
