I would like some clarification on focal adhesions (and stress fibers). Do proliferating cells express more or less vinculin-immunopositive focal adhesions (and phallodin-positive stress fibers)?
I do not think there is a simple relationship here that holds for all cell types. In many normal cell types, higher cytoskeletal tension is correlated with more proliferation. However, some cytokines such as TGFbeta induce strong contractility, but can be anti-proliferative in some celll types. Moreover, transformed cells often have high proliferative rates and weak cell-matrix adhesion, especially in metastatic cells. What cell type(s) are you interested in?
