I agree with Kamal, that parents should be childrens' role models...although some parents have different "values and principles" which are passed on to their children.

Some cultures, have lying or "story telling" as a widespread trait. I only admit lying when by doing so, you're avoiding a bigger damage. Simple lies are called "white lies", meaning they are harmless.

How many times you have said to a friend what a nice car, or what a beautiful attire, when you really don't like them? But, such a small lie brings happiness and comfort to someone else.

In addition, I would like to say that this is a very good and very topical question. I work as a teacher and I see many examples of parents’ irresponsibility. The parents lies about the reasons of their kid’s absence from school. If there is a difficult test, they let children stay at home and then they are telling teachers that the child was sick or that there was a very urgent family matter. I was a witness of the situation where child played hooky. The student was caught by the police and brought to the school. The teacher called parents and informed them about such situation and parents were lying that the kid is sick and she is staying in the bed.

In conclusion, taking care of children means providing the conditions for a dignified life. But it also means teaching them how to be good people. Lying and justifying absence from school will not make them good people.

Here, some parents have 2 weeks holidays at the same last 2 weeks of the school term. To ease their holiday plans, their children just skip that last 2 weeks of school.  I think it's due to a materialistic thinking and parents have entirely forgotten that school provides socialization and informal learning.

Teach these children that everything is acquired through effort is a way to teach them to survive. and whatever the circumstances and lifestyle. I start with my question, why did the children lie? There are two answers, internally, and externally.

Internally, maybe the children do not dare to face the truth, and externally, maybe the children follow the adult ways, it would be from their eldest brother or sisters. Nevertheless, the parent get to show their honesty is the best way......

But sometimes I see parents actually swearing in front of their children.  Such bad speech, if copied by the child, will ruin the child; because none of us like people who speak in this bad manner.  In some places, parents even encourage their children to steal; stealing some fruits from a neighbor's tree is practiced without any shame or guilt. It's sad that such parents are parents at all.

Last whole of the week was a electronic week, between me and my second born. Aged 14, in his experimentation stage, researched on the following almost on a every day basis.

In India, especially in TamilNadu, when the Final exams of Secondary and Higher Secondary levels take place (exams are conducted by the Government authorities and not by schools), the other classes are rescheduled for afternoon sessions, he was free while his elder brother was busy studying or watching TV. Eariler, after every incident, both would join together and say, they dont know.

Dear Darko, I wish to add my observations on what happens to my students who stay in a residential college.  They all get an allowance from the ministry of education.  If they aren't well, they are supposed to get a medical cert from the clinic or hospital, and for other acceptable reasons they should get a certified slip from the fellow in charge of their block.  But they sometimes write a handwritten note as they weren't sick enough to go to the clinic, and they rested in their dorms.  Even the fellow refused to sign.

They lied to avoid work, hard work.  They didn't attend 6 hours of lectures or tutorials or practicals although they could still walk around!  But as long as I (or some of us) can walk, I (we) would be at work.
