Centromeres are epigenetic structures. The peri-centromeric repeats mentioned in other comments are not the centromere itself. Studies of neocentromeres (newly formed centromeres), which do not have peri-centromeric repeats, have revealed that that there are no clear sequence requirements for a functional centromere.
