If Vets and para Vets are not taking care then it is like playing with fire and expecting that fire would forgive the naive handlers. Kindly note sometime these virulent organisms are resistant to as many as 50 or more commonly antibiotics also. Take care........
Dear Dr. Jai Ghosh, These are not only vets and paravets but medicos and paramedics are too equally responsible. Now-a-days you go to any medico with any of the minor ailment and see one or more antibiotic is always there in prescription and a person of clinical epidemiology I see that last end antibiotics are the choice due big chunk of commission. Not all but many are doing it, using carbapenems and it has become more common since the availability of oral carbapenems.
This is the world of selfishness and ethics is at verge of banishment.
I fully agree with you Dr. Singh. The basics of epidemiological studies are lost when it comes to treatment of any infection. the clinicians and the vets say that it is the instant treatment to get well thatb fetches them the money and sometimes the luxurious living style that follows. Least do they realize the importance of preventive medicines. So also is the case withe cortico steroids, alkaloids, glycosides etc (often grossly misused in the name of getting well instantly). Of course the patient (whether a human being or an animal) pays a heavy price down the line (often with their life) for this.
ESKAPE pathogens of veterinary origin are gradually gaining importance and this is due partly to the use of antibiotics in livestock. Concerted efforts need to be made to curb this trend.
Yes, of course they do matter. They will spread the antibiotic resistance gene in environment plus they will act as transient colonizers leading to acquisition of susceptible host to cause infection. They are also amenable to cause collateral damage.
Rather than relying on the theoretical considerations above, what is the evidence for increased mortality and morbidity in vets, especially from infections?
