I am using DesignBuilder (and EnergyPlus) to calculate the effects of occupancy and door opening. In the cold winter days, the impact of the open door on the space heating is very high and as a result in my cases they had to turn additional heating on to reach the desirable temperature. However, when I run the simulation in DesignBuilder and turn the natural ventilation on, I get only 1% to 5% increase in my total energy consumption when I use a hole instead of a door.

In similar studies, scholars have usually used formulas to calculate the wasted energy through open doors accurately, not energy simulations.

I was wondering if I am not doing it right or the effect of cold air flow in the space through a hole is not being calculated in the simulation and heating design accurately.

Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks
