I need to calculate the molecular weight of gellan gum solution of different viscosity. It can be calculated using the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada equation
which provides the relation between intrinsic viscosity and
molecular weight.
Intrinsic viscosity = K*MWa
But for this equation i required empirical constants (K) value for gellan gum. please help me with this.
You could try the paper on gellan gum by M. Milas, X. Shi, and M. Rinaudo, Biopolymers 30 (1990) 451-464. I have no access to this publication, so I am not sure if it really presents K and a values of the MHS equation.
Please note that gellan is a polyelectrolyte: intrinsic viscoity will be profoundly influenced by solvent composition (notably the presence of salts). Moreover, gellan gum may undergo a conformational transition at certain conditions, which will also have a significant effect on intrinsic viscosity.
