Disabling graphics with IDL?

I'm a Linux user (Ubuntu) and I need to run some routines with IDL licence. I would also like to disable the graphic output of such routines.

I tried to set the bash options "unset DISPLAY" and "export DISPLAY" before running IDL, with the only result that graphics appears on the screen of the workstation where the IDL licence is installed. Can anybody help me with a real solution?
