The RMS detector was made in the old days measuring the heat generated by the RF signal and then evaluating the power from the temperature change in such a resistor. Later (already in the 70th )there came (random) sampling voltmeters e.g tp measure faint CW signals in a noise background (for certain NF measurements). One can also use a RF diode in the square law regime. The log power device has an analog or theses days rather digital unit to convert linear to log format. I am little bit worry. You said that you want to detect the signal envelope and then you speak from other types of detectors such as RMS detector and log power detector. The RMS detector can be accomplished by using square law devices such as the Mosfet transistors. The log power is only one take the log of the power from the mean square detector. This is called a power level scale.

Then remains the envelope detector which is built from a diode loaded by a capacitor and resistor. The output voltage at the RC parallel combinations follow the envelope of the RF signal.

One can process the envelope to regenerate the data pulses or the information.
