In my 3-D simulation of natural convection flow, I calculated mass flow rate using Fluent and CFD-Post. There is a significant difference between the value of both methods, though they belong to the same simulation. So what method does fluent and CFD-post use to calculate the mass flow rate which is causing such discrepancy in value?
I believe the velocity you want to use is actually the axial velocity. When running my current simulation of flow rate through a nozzle I used surface integrals in the report menu to get an accurate reading but when calculating the flow through use of a custom field function the velocity which returned the same value for flow rate was the axial velocity.
you can use standard massflow option in fluent. but to check this use velocity normal to the surface in your calculation. I think both should agree.

If you are trying to calculate the mass flowrate in the ANSYS Fluent software, try rechecking the Reference values. They should be set properly. The problem is it always shows some number, but without setting the Reference values the results are not right.
Usually, I try to obtain the most basic values from ANSYS Fluent and calculate the secondary parameters in Microsoft Excel using the equations from similar studies. I have found this calculation method less confusing.
I certainly agree with the response of Ali Faddouli I do use surface integrals as well as custom function for flow rate calculation.
