Coprolalia (compulsive cursing), as an involuntary energy discharge, is similar to other impulsive overflows as seen in tics and epilepsy. Cursing displaces aggression into spheres of expressive language. Obsessive rumination precedes coprolalia. The more violent and uncontrolled the coprolalia, the closer it is to conflictual areas. The uses of cursing in sexual hostility, in control of the demons of sexuality, and as attenuated forms of sexual adaptation are indicated. Coprolalia is a pathognomonic sign of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. A case of mild compulsive swearing is given as an example of the "madonnaprostitute" split, followed by successful integration.
