Cytokines are secreted by white blood cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, epithelial cells etc. They are soluble hormone-like protein that allow communication between cells and the external environment.
Put simply, cytokines include monokines, the hormone like substances secreted by monocytes and macrophages, and lymphokines secreted by lymphocytes. The nomenclature is not straightforward with some interleukins made predominantly by monocytes, some by lymphocytes and others by both.
