I want to see how the river is going to fluctuate (discharge as well as water level) due to climate change at the headwork (intake) of an irrigation project. I want to develop a relation between flow in river and corresponding flow in canal. For this, I need to know not only the discharge but also the water level in the river. The catchment area of river at the outlet is around 60000 km2 and the river width at intake is about 400m (difficult to carry out the river X-cross manually).
If I am not wrong, SWAT gives only the discharge. I am not sure about HecHMS. Can I link HecHMS discharge data with HecRAS later in this case?
Any suggestions which model to use in this case?
I think you should developt two kind of modeling, Hydrologic modeling and Hydraulic Modeling. Firstly, you should simulate hydrologic modeling to estimate the water discharge as impact of climate change. For this case, I think SWAT is better than HECHMS, because SWAT accommodate variability of climate data in the input model. The output of hydrologic modeling (discharge), then can be used as input on Hydraulic modeling by using Hec-RAS. The output of HecRAS modeling, not only water elevation, but also other water flow parameters, such as velocity, discharge, etc.
You should use both Hydrologic and hydraulic models. Depending on your available and reliable information, you can choose model. If you don't have long term observed data, you can think for a event base model. Of course, any free software will have limitation. You can think for FEM 2D model.
Hec hms provides you with the discharge data ( no info about water level). For linking Hechms and hecras directly within another program, engineers at hec developed HEC-WAT, however it is not available to the public . As researchers have mentioned above, you can still try to work on developing separate hydrologic and hydraulic model for your case. Though, i am not sure if you will be able to work on hydraulic model in absence of cross section information or rating curve
In absence of cross section data, I want to know whether it is possible to use satellite images (if available) in hydraulic models to develop rating curve!!!
if natural channel, you can use DEM. I don't think satellite image will help in this regard for the water body. I am not sure the advances of remote sensing now. I have very minimum understanding about RS. 2D-FEM technique is a good option but a complex technique
I suggest you the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) developed by EPA. This model can give you the water level at specific points. You can calibrate the model with parameters of infiltration and Manning roughness.
you can use Hec-Hms that will give you thedischarge at the outlet and use the rating curve to obtain the water level in the canal if it is a non-uniform section
