I am concerned about heat transfer profile and mathematical expression of heating a water tank from above.
When you heat water from the bottom, convection due to hot water rising and being replaced by cold water, a mixing occurs.
But when you are heating from top of the tank, I wonder if it is the same heat profile. Because, heated water will stay up and only convection will be the mechanism of heat transfer.
If you can cite a book for this, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

So, I think convection is negligible in your case. you can calculate the heat flux by assuming the conduction the only heat transfer mechanism and on the other hand, you can check it by the formula of heat convection for heated plates in small spaces. I think the heat transfer book by Holman can help you.

In such cases, I think the convection is mainly negligible especially if the horizontal dimension is small enough.
Thank you Dr. Mohammad Vajdi . Horizontal dimension is 20 cm. But more than that, I think vertical dimension as little as 1 cm would make convection more negligible. What do you think?
