Hi, I have some problem with the identification of these Holothuria from the Ionian sea (Mediterranean Sea) The first that i named forskali had cuvierian tubules, the other two species does not.
Could someone suggest me any paper or books useful for the identification of Mediterranean species of Holothuria?

Ciao Valerio, sei riuscito poi a classificarle? L'esemplare delle ultime 3 immagini potrebbe essere Holothuria polii, ma ho bisogno di alcuni caratteri che dalle foto non si evincono per confemarlo. Emette filamenti adesivi? la parte dorsale è più scura della ventrale? viene da fondi sabbiosi?

Ciao Massimo, no non ha emesso tubuli di cuvier. Però viene da fondi sabbiosi e la parte ventrale è più chiara della dorsale
ohh bene, allora non si tratta dell'Oloturia di Poli bensì della H. tubulosa, se poi registri che l'esemplare supera i 20 cm di lunghezza (la H.tubulosa può arrivare fino a 35cm!!!) siamo a cavallo. In caso contrario per avere la certezza assoluta dovresti prelevare un frammento di epidermide e analizzarlo al microscopio in controluce, quindi individure le placche scheletriche e confrontarle con la guida sugli Echinodermata del Tortonese.
Identification of sea cucumbers without good pictures of their external features, colouration and ossicles where present is very difficult and mostly guesswork. The presence or absence of Cuvierian tubules is very significant in related species. For a good coverage of Mediterranean species refer to the works of Koehler (1921) and'or Tortonese, which are quite dated. Panning 1929-1935 papers are ialso very useful. However, there are some more recent works on Mediterranean species but these are mostly on gene sequencing and I forget the authors' names (perhaps Perez-Ruzafa, I think, and I have no resource where I am to give other references). References to some recent papers can also be found in Karim & Thandar (2013/2014). Hope this helps.
