I have used a respirable dust sampler for the collection of PM10 on quartz fiber filters and after sampling, extraction with DCM and rota evaporation. Now, for quantification of organic tracers in these ambient air samples, with the help of GC/MS, I would like to know the right capillary column. The choice I had, is DB-624 in a lab. Which columns can I use for this?
PM10 on filter contains less volatile and also many polar compounds. 624 is good for VOCs. It is not going to be good for the filter extracts.
It depends on properties of compounds. DB-624 is more polar than DB-5 MS, and Temperature Range is smaller, which makes it more sensitive to damage. If analytes are more polar You can determine them by using both of them.
DB-624 is suitable mainly for volatiles. DB-5 is universal column for a lot of compounds. You want to analyse organic compounds from PM10 (semivolatile, nonvolatile), so I would decide DB-5.
