I have built a ball milling to use mainly on the fragmentation of coal ash. Now I need to acquire the spheres to operate it. Steel spheres are cheap, but I am afraid they can liberate iron as it is used. What type of material would be more appropriate for this particular application?
It depends on how many and which impurities are tolerable in your product. No matter what material your grinding balls are made of, there is always a certain amount of abrasion. If your product can't contain iron at all, the next possible ball material is aluminum oxide. In this case, you have no iron abrasion, but an aluminum oxide abrasion.
