To dissolve iron powder, I highly recommend you use 1.5N or higher morality HCl. To completely dissolve iron into HCl, you do need to heat at 100 oC for 24h or more. Teflon beaker or strong materials are recommended to use for dissolving iron powder, and heating solution. If you don't have heater, Fe powder can dissolve in HCl, but take the time, (at least 4 days or more than a week, it depends on desired concentration of iron that you would like to make).
The final solution will have a light green.
Nitric acid is not recommended to dissolve iron powder as making NO gas that is dangerous for you.
