I have a batch of files in SPSS and SAS formats and I need to convert them into R data format. What is the syntax for doing this? What I need is not making R read these files, but to convert them to another format and to be stored under a path (e.g., D:/ ...). Thanks to all contributors! ;-)
You can convert all your files to a general format like .csv in order to make them accessible by majority if not all of programs.
USe Rcmdr. If you install this program, you will get a menu and it will let you read spss and sas file in R directly.You will get a syntax to use again. You can also use the package foreign. It will help you read into R different file types.
There are ways of reading in both SPSS and SAS data files to R.
You can use haven package.
library(haven)
## Bring in SPSS file
newdata
to export data, use the package foreign. Format of the command:
write.foreign(df, datafile, codefile, package = c("SPSS", "Stata", "SAS"), ...)
Example for SPSS:
write.foreign(esoph,datafile,codefile,package="SPSS")

Sorry for joining the party so late.
I guess that you are mostly interested in the data from international large-scale assessments. A new R package (just released) converts the SPSS (or TXT, in case of PISA prior 2015) into native .RData file format. It also assigns the user-defined missing values to an attribute for later use (if needed). The package's main functionality is, though, analyzing data from these studies.
