This scenario may have come across a number of times however i checked nabble & SO and couldn't find a solution hence request assistance.
I have a date variable in my data-set eir. The class of this var was character while i had read the file in r studio. Example of date - 05-30-16
To change this i have used eir$date
as.Date("05-30-16", "%m-%d-%y")
works perfectly for me. So you will need to explore your data more closely and try to find where the problem is. For example, if head(eir$date) is showing you NAs, maybe the original values of eir$date (before you converted them) were already not in the right format.

this is the exact case where head(eir$date) shows some of the values as NAs but some of the values appear correctly. As this file i read was from csv format hence i had ensured to convert date column all the values in date format.
The more recent versions of R have a "trimws" function to remove leading and trailing white spaces. So try as.Date(trimws(eir$date, "%m-%d-%y")).
Also, sometimes R has trouble correctly interpreting years in 2-digit format. Is it possible to change the format within Excel so the year is stored as a 4-digit number?
Hi Henry, this is very much possible to change the format as you have suggested.
Thanks for sharing this syntax as i was not aware on trimws function.
Also, there may be hidden quotation characters (' and ") or special characters (# or \) that can cause data read errors. In Excel, use the "replace" function to get rid of all of these.
I would suggest using Hadley Wickham's Lubridate package. https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/lubridate/index.html
It has some built in helper functions that you might find make this process much easier.
