We are renting a small laboratory (135 sqft) where we mainly do chemistry. We will receive from overseas samples of 1 kg of Purple non-sulfur bacteria which has been fixed and disinfected with Formalin and dried. We will received in 2 days and keep it refrigerated in our laboratory and then will use it in several batches to digest the biomass (we do not make it grow, they would be killed by chemicals). We wonder whether our laboratory should be classified as containment level 1 or 2.
You don't need BSL containment when using fixed non-pathogenic tissues or cells but you do need to take the necessary chemical precautions for handling with formalin fixed tissues and cells since formalin is a known human carcinogen. Standard PPE should suffice.

If unsure, go for level 1.
I give lab classes, using disinfected/deactivated biological substances, and we chose to lower our BSL from 2 to 1.
