I do research on environmental civil society organizations in post-Fukushima Japan. I thrive on comparative research between Japan and the US. Currently, my main focus is =to highlight the institutionalized organizations in Japan working for nuclear-free energy and a shift from nuclear to renewable energy. Considering the different socio-political and environmental dynamics, it would be interesting to examine how the Western counterpart of Japan, the US, is doing in this matter. Any recommendation? This is a very interesting subject of Study. I wish someone does something similar for India.
The qualitative methodology does not allow us to make inferences beyond the cases. The proposed research could show cultural differences on the conceptualization of power or the degree of collective thought.
I recommend having a look at Sovacool & Valentine's book "The National Politics of Nuclear Power" (Routledge, 2013). They did a comparative analysis of the political economy of nuclear power in Japan and the US (and 4 other countries). Although civil society is not a central part of their analysis, they do pay attention to its role in nuclear power politics.
