How a forensic investigator can use the cigarette ash collected from a crime scene? Is there any case study in which the cigarette ash played a significant role in solving the crime?
In my view cigarette ash cannot be used as forensic evidence, however cigarette buds can be used. Fingerprint could be lifted from cigarette buds and epithelial cells of saliva present in the cigarette buds used for DNA Analysis and typing.
Besides finger prints and DNA profiling from saliva, ash may have contents of drug abuse susbstances so their use in cigarrettte tobacco before crime may be circumstantially correlated.
In relation to identifying the brand, it would be necessary to analyze all the existing brands in the market and compare with their evidence. And it should be taken into account that the samples may not be homogeneous in relation to their chemical constitution.
