LAB such as Lactobacillus spp are known as fastidious microorganisms that cannot grow on simple mineral media supplemented only with a carbon source. In addition to carbohydrates (carbon source), culture media of LAB are usually supplemented with various
acids esters, minerals, vitamins, and buffering agents. Thus few culture media are available for growing these bacteria such as MRS and M17. However, Yoo et al (2018) developed a cheap medium for growing a strain of Lactobacillus plantarum with a cultivation rate equals 96.2% of that of MRS.
MRS medium is rich in minerals and growth factors and hence is used for such fastidious lactobacilli. However, it could be replaced successfuly by a media based on whey enriched with minerals in many studies,
Main cost factor seems to be yeast extract. There are some cheaper yeast extract sources e.g. made from spent brewers yeast...maybe that is an option for you.
