I am planning to do experiments where I want to tag neurons involved in memory engram after auditory fear conditioning in mice and then look at the temporal profile of which neurons get tagged after retrieval at 2weeks, 4weeks, 6 weeks and 2 months.

I found this paper which has used cfos to do that.

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2012.11.019

But it has used cfos as the promoter for tagging the cells.

I am continuing a project where Arc promoter has been used in the previous experiments. But Arc protein takes 5h to reach peak expression after retrieval. And is expressed less in amygdala. (Region I am interested in)

Whereas cfos expression peaks at 1.5hr and expresses more in amygdala.

I was trying to understand how will it affect my interpretation of results if I use different IEG's. What significance does the differential spatial and temporal profile of IEG's in the brain signify? Especially in relation to tagging memory engrams.

Please provide any good references - papers, books, etc for the same. Thanks.
