I want to acquire an A3 scanner for historical aerial photography. I will use these images for digital photogrammetrical reconstruction and the quality and consistency (lack of deformations caused by the scanning process) is essential. After doing some preliminary reading it is still not clear to me what scanning method is better for this purpose CCD or CIS as I have found very different opinions on this subject.
I would be thankful if I could get opinions about this and, if possible, recommendations of good A3 scanners for this task.

Hi Hector! Why not considering the use of SfM - photogrammetry to scan and digitise historical cartography? I tried for my PhD and in case of huge maps (more than 2m x 2m) with great results! If you need bibliography about the method, text me! :)
Hi Filippo, thanks for your answer. I didn't consider the use of SfM for the scanning process (only after scanning had been done in order to generate an orthophotomosaic). In this case I am interested in aerial imagery in photographic paper (23x23cm), which incorporates deformations caused by the camera lens (I already have the camera parameters). I would not want to incorporate new deformations (or as few as possible) and that is why I was considering buying a good scanner. However, please, do send me information of the use of SfM for the analog-digital conversion!

I think CCD Scanners are far better when the highest image quality is the target. Its method takes care of a very high resolution along with widened color space.
CIS brings less depth of field and also de color space is reduced if you compared it with CCD technologies.
In my opinion, if you really need quality you should be looking at a CCD Scanner even thought they’re not cheap at all.
If quality is not that important But, many manufacturers have overcome this by developing sophisticated software that compensates for the CIS shortcomings.
Filippo proposal it’s really interesting but still need to scan your images to produce an SFM orthophotomosaic.

Thanks for your paper Filippo Brandolini! This is a great example of the use of SfM for the digitalisation of historical maps. However I am not sure this method can be directly applied to aerial photographs where the deformation of the photographs (caused by the camera lens and not the photographic paper) provides significant information for the orthorectification process.
