I am starting a research on the functionalization of carbon nanotubes with OH- groups.
I want to use the functionalized nanotubes in the synthesis of hydroxyapatite, please somebody know an easy procedure to functionalized the carbon nanotubes with OH- groups? I have tried to use nitric acid and it hasn't worked.

It is clear that an oxidation of CNT as well as other carbonaceous materials gives different oxygen containing functional groups. Roughly, their quantity and partial content should depend on an oxidant nature and concentration, content and origin of CNT, temperature and other technological factors. Therefore, you can not expect to generate only OH groups in the oxidation approach. But, based on simple organic chemistry, you can go further in this approach and to try chemically reduce the oxidized CNT. Something like this is used for graphene oxide chemistry. Probably it can help in your case.
To obtain OH-groups, treat nanotubes in a planetary ball mill together with solid KOH. The processing conditions are selected depending on the model of the ball mill.

Nitric Acid would rather generate COOH groups depending on the strength of acid.
Prolonged treatment of CNTs with ultrasound in water will generate OH groups on their surface. It will also help to disperse them as well which in many cases is a plus.
