Have a look at REF-N-WRITE scientific paper writing tool. This tool allows you to import text from previous papers relevant to the subject area in MS word. While you are writing your paper, you can just search for similar statements from other authors and inherit their vocabulary and language to improve your paper. I do not think you will find a free editing site that has sufficient ability to edit a scholarly manuscript.
The only other alternative would be to find a colleague with sufficient English ability who will give you help as a favor between friends. :-(

I just learned about AuthorAID yesterday when reading a journal article review received by one of my students. The vision of AuthorAid is to "[provide] support, mentoring, resources and training for researchers in developing countries." While I don't yet know the details of what they offer nor its quality, certainly I want to learn more. I have never tried this, but I wonder if it might be possible to arrange an exchange of editing services with a colleague who is working on a scholarly manuscript in your own first language, or a language in which you have good competency. Not all scholars are born writers, and those with sufficient self-knowledge will appreciate help in making their writing smoother, more idiomatic, and hence more persuasive. But the work should be of commensurate quality in order that the exchange may be fair.

I have just watched your various videos on Ref-N-Write and also looked at some of its FAQs. The software sounds interesting, but I'm wondering if there's somewhere I can read published reviews on it. . . .it's scary to download something whose installation antivirus software tries to block!

It may be helpful to use such software which can enhance scholarly writing but in my view the value of individual linguistic and creative artistic competence in scholarly writing cannot be discounted.

There is a language tool called Grammarly. It has a free version.
However it does not give you an access to all language suggestions, but it is good in detecting the common mistakes in grammar, syntax, and language usage.

Most of the sites have some catch. Ultimately they'll end up squeezing money out of you. So either go for your English dept colleagues or try "Grammarly".

Most of English language editing services are not free. Grammarly is a good alternative I think.
Most of the online free services preserve a copy of your MS and it is not adviceable. It is better to approach any English expert from your network/college. You may request him/her and most of them will help you freely for a good cause.

We can use Grammarly for FREE, and it is easily available (online). Grammarly makes sure everything you type is effective and mistake-free...
I know the original poster probably already found a solution, but I just wanted to say that I'm an English language editor for a few firms, and even though I can't do it for free, I'd be happy to edit at cost (approximately $20/1000 words) for anyone who needs it. Usually the editor only gets about 20% of what you pay a firm, so going with an editor directly can save a lot of money. Anyone interested can message me here!
