In hydrological modelling the impact of spatio-temporal variability on modeled runoff responses is an active research topic (e.g. Sun et al., 2000, Syed et al., 2003, Kim et al., 2008,Vieux et al., 2009, Anquetin et al., 2010, Looper and Vieux, 2012, He et al., 2013, Lobligeous et al., 2014; Emmanuel et al., 2015, 2017). In soil erosion modelling, on the other hand, this subject seems to be much less addressed by recent research. I found some studies that address the impact of rain variability on Soil erosion at long time scales in landscape evolution models (Baartman et al., 2013, Hancock and Coulthart, 2012, Tucker and Bras, 2000), but I have trouble finding studies that address the event scale. The location of rain cells and the quality of the input data that represents –or not – spatial variability of the rain fields is surely very important. One good example that I found is the study by Shen et al., 2012 who evaluate the impact of different rainfall interpolation methods (Centroid method, Thiessen Polygon, Inverse Distance Weighting, 2 Kriging techniques) on Soil erosion modeled on a daily scale with SWAT. Can you recommend other studies that address this topic?
