If I were to connect a snap electrode (ones used for ECG/EMG; 10mm diameter) to the constant-current stimulator for the purpose of stimulating the femoral nerve, is this still a valid procedure for interpolated twitch technique?
Previous studies have used 10mm diameter electrodes, and it seems that only ECG/EMG electrodes are this small.
We have always used larger adhesive electrodes (e.g., 7 x 10-cm adhesive electrodes; UniPatch 620SS, Wabasha, MN) on the interpolated twitch technique. It is best to not attempt to stimulate the nerve directly. It is not tolerated as well by the subjects because the afferents are also being stimulated more directly. A related procedure that may be performed is nerve conduction study (NCS). NCS is a measurement of the amount and speed of conduction of an electrical impulse through a nerve. NCS can determine nerve damage and destruction, and is often performed at the same time as EMG. Both procedures help to detect the presence, location, and extent of diseases that damage the nerves and muscles.

I would love to keep an option for stimulating the muscle directly rather than the nerve; however, many previous studies have stimulated the femoral nerve with repeated sprints model. I looked for validity/reliability of muscle stimulation in comparison to nerve stimulation, but I could not find any papers on that. Thus, I believe that to keep consistency with previous studies that have examined neuromuscular fatigue during repeated sprints, it would be the best to stimulate the nerve instead. What are your thoughts?
In our early work on the knee extensors, we compared the so-called nerve stimulation technique side-by-side with the muscle stimulation technique and got the same results in terms of torque production. We also had the participants compare the stimulation sensations. The muscle stimulation was considered more tolerable.
