Up to some extent you may have some idea... but it needs higher magnifications... even to observe nanoparticles assembly in a confined cell, the position of analyzer and polarizer need to be optimized... other than 90°...

Nanoparticles (< 100 nm) are not visible in standard optical microscopy - you need electron microscopy.
