Are you sure that we can ionize these hydroxyl protons(pKa is above 14) with NaOH? I do not want excess of NaOH or any other base remaining there without being consumed.

Even K2CO3 also works for salicilic acid, i have tried and succeeded for the preparation of methyl ether in acetone and methyl iodide.
