I have prepared PVA -gelatin membrane by drying at room temperature. Now i am interested in depositing/adsorption ZnO NPs on the surface of the membrane and study its antibacterial activity. Is the deposition of ZnO on the membrane surface possible and will that show any enhancement in anti bacterial activity.
yes you can deposit the ZnO on to PVA, but check with other membranes also. cause it depends how they are deposited and at what ratio. i agree with jeon ZnO act as the antibacterial and the size of the ZnO matters
yes it is possible but the adsorption would be dependant on the nature of the functional group on the surface of polymer resulted from PVA and gelatin
you can do that within the fabricate of membrane by mixing the ZnO NP with the solvent (such as NMP) and then add to the polymer under stringing for certain time before fabricate.
During the fabrication of membrane, it is possible to get a composite structure by adding of particles and more reasonable. But your solid materials should be same particle size and you should manage homogeneous dispersion for proper membrane. You can also adjust certain solid percentage by this method. If you adsorb particles, you should analyse the solution concentration after adsorption process to determine the amount of adsorbed particles. Additionally with adsorption, particles enter the polymeric pores in other words they absorbed in. But if you add ZnO during the polimer production you can get more stable composites.
The best way to adsorb particles on a solid surface is in liquid medium, particularly in aqueous medium by the formation of double electric layer on both the adsorbent as in adsorbato. However, if the PVA-gelatin swells in water, I suggest then the tert-butanol solvent, dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide high polarity solvents.
