Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) theory of conceptual metaphors and drawing on Grady’s (2005) notion of recurrent correlation of experiences, one of the fundamental functions of handicrafts can be found in forming conceptual frames. Activities such as weaving, crafting, and pottery, through repeated and correlated bodily experiences as well as a special process, contribute to creating stable mental frames. These frameworks later serve as the basis for metaphorical projections into more abstract domains, such as daydreaming, weaving social ties, and beyond. Thus, handicrafts have held cognitive value and played a crucial role in developing the metaphorical capacities of language and human thought.
