I mean if we want to conduct a research experiment on Integrated application of Nitrogen levels with Humic acid on growth and phonological development of maize hybrids and open pollinated varieties. Can we recommend the out comes of this experiment for both hybrid and OPV?
But in a Research forum some of senior scientists raised questions on my experiment. They were of view that we should compare maize hybrids with hybrids only. In such an experiment where we are comparing hybrids with OPV, we cannot recommend fertilizer recommendation because hybrids generally have more Nitrogen requirement than OPV. Please elaborate or suggest me some latest Impact factor journal publication to have a precise picture.
Hybrid should be managed according to its production technology while OPV must be treated as per its own recommendations. Thus comparison of a hybrid with OPV can done. We can't apply the same recommendations (production technology) both for hybrid and OPV.
the hybrids have better and improved metabolic system which utilize more and more nutrient including Nitrogen as compared to OPV, therefore if we compare both OPV and Hybrids in the same trail will give ambiguous results. we can use OPVs and hybrids is separate trials for nitrogen
Re-seaarch means to study search with new variables. I mean to study with a new idea. I suggest that as a scientist you can betterly decide it.
The comparison of a hybrid with OPV can be done, if you apply the specified recommended Agronomic practices (production technology) for them. I am sure you can do this trial. Otherwise, how we will compare them ??

If the goal of the experiment is to prove which of the two (Hybrid and OPV) is high yielding under different levels of fertiliser, then you can compare. if its for recommendation purposes, then you cannot compare the two.

Yes, you can use a maize hybrid and an OPV in experiment. A hybrid has a narrow genetic base whereas an OPV has a broad genetic base, thus they are expected to behave differently. The OPV cam be also included as a check
You can compare the two. But note that your comparison must be directional. i.e focus on trait of interest. Even though OPV has wider genetic potential, the yield performance may not be comparable to that of the maize hybrid.Therefore, your comparison must have research objective. remember location/environment also play a significant role in both the OPV and hybrid maize performance.
Also would encourage that you randomly select inbreds and hybrids and use a large number of them. Comparing one hybrid with one op will only do that it will not provide a body of evidence to compare the two types.
Hybrids do require more intensive inputs as compared to OPVs for expression of their potential to the best. I think one can go ahead with such trial but relevant checks must be used in the experiment.
Yes, You can compare the hybrid and OPV in fertilizer experiment. no problem, then you can compare the genetic potential/ response to fertilizers in both varieties.
One of the objective of our research is to see the cost of production and maximizing profits mean obtaining higher yield in OPV of maize closer to that can be obtained with Hybrid with minimum nitrogen application. In agreement with Shoukat Rather, Can I select suitable checks: Hybrid for hybrid and OPV for OPV in this trial?
