We are trying to determinate glycerol by Gas Chromatography using a polar column (CP - WAX 52 CB) but the results are not trustworthy. We know that there is water in the mixture. Could the water interfere in the quatification of glycerol because of its polarity? I'm looking for some papers informing that.

What type of detector are you using? If it is an FID, I don't believe water should be detected. Also, I'm not sure what your conditions are, but glycerol is not very volatile, certainly much less than water, so it doesn't seem likely that they would co-elute.

analysis of glycerol - directly by GC is difficult - it can decompose at high temperatures of injection. What are your conditions?
You can think about cold on-column injection and ramp inj. temperature.
Column - it will be eluted in lower temp. using a non polar column. If your sample is not very complex you don't need a polar/selective stationary phase.
The water is not a problem.
You can also think about derivatization by silylation.

We use these conditions:
-Injector temperature: 230°C
-Detector temperature: 250°C
-Temperature programe: 5 min at 50°C - 40°C/min to 230°C - 10 min at 230°C
-Column: CP - WAX 52 CB (polar)
-Carrier Gas: Nitrogen
-Column Flow: 10.7 ml/min
-Inlet pressure: 50 kPa
-Total Flow: 50 ml/min
-Column Flow: 10.7 ml/min
-Split: 4
We have problems with quantification of glycerol area. The mesure is different every time we inject, so we can't make a calibration curve. We don't know what to do!

Do you think it is too much flow?
My column ID is 0,53 mm. We use a total flow of 50 ml/min and Split=4.
Should we try to reduce the column flow?
