Magnaporthe grisea and M. oryza are heterothallic fungi. Mating type analysis using standard primer sets (Bao-Hua et, 2004) however, identify duel maters meaning the presence of both MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 alleles/loci in the same strain. Many researchers have reported this and we also found that in PCR certain strains produce positive bands for both alleles. How is this possible? I would be grateful for any insights on this phenomena.
